Announcing Nightmare Vampires 2009!

Next year Nightmare is doing something a little different - an entire house dedicated to vampires. But this ain’t all about Dracula or Count Chocula. We want you to tell us your 5 favorite vampires of all time. You can apply it to even the loosest definition of the word. If enough people write it in, or we find it clever enough, you can be sure there will be a room about it in next year’s haunted house!

November 4th, 2008 at 2:12 am
Blade & anything from Anne Rice’s Vampire Cronicles.
November 4th, 2008 at 2:15 am
- Chinese vampires (Jiang shi) as seen in Encounters of the Spooky Kind or Mr. Vampire–check wikipedia for more info!
- Nosferatu–the classic archetype of gritty vampiric terror.
- For something more modern, forget Anne Rice-pires and go with Rod Ferrell from the real-life “Vampire clan” murders.
- The special effects on the Fright Night vampire are spectacular, and a definite visual point of reference.
- For another “real-life” scare, you could do a mock-up of an exhumed corpse that DISPLAYS the signs of advanced decomposition that some scientists believe could account for vampire legends (again, see WP).
Cheers!

This is a pretty cool idea, and my husband Ali (Ali’s Savage Traits) is a Custom Fangsmith in NYC… certainly one of the best out there these days. He only charges $25 per fang, and has incredible designs to choose from. The process only takes about 30 minutes per fang. We have photos and flyers available… but if you want this to be a success in 2009, I suggest sending your actors to him for their fangs. You’ll scare the hellout of everybody… we always do! You can check out his work and reach me through http://www.LadyZombie.com/CustomFangsInNyc.htm (or through my myspace) http://www.myspace.com/theladyzombie.

November 4th, 2008 at 8:02 pm
I hope you have something truly horrifying. I dare you to scare me! Top Scary Vampires of all time:
1. By far, the vamps from 30 Days of Night are the most frightening I’ve ever seen.
2. Salem’s Lot freaky vampires. Especially Danny Glick scratching on the window to let him in. I may crap myself if you have this in next years exhibition.
3. Nosferatu. Nasty Lean Little Bastard, that one.
4. The freaky Lost Boys Vampires. Seriously in need of pedicures but creepy fang faces.
5. Susan Sarandon and David Bowie in The Hunger. Sexy, Metropolitan, chomp you are dead.
November 5th, 2008 at 3:43 am
My Favorite Vampires are
1.Count Dracula
2.Count Yorga
3.Prince Mamuwalde aka Blacula
4. Carmilla/Marcilla/Mircalla from Hammer Film’s The Vampire Lovers
5.Princess Asa from Mario Bava’s Black Sunday
November 6th, 2008 at 7:09 pm
Dick Cheney has to be a vampire. if he is, and again i am sure he is, then DIck Cheney is the best vampire. Next would be Sarah Palin who is without question a vampire (30 Days of Night was set in her hometown, hello!), then Grace Jones in Vamp, then the little boy tapping on the window in Salem’s Lot (please have that room), and this one vampire i saw in a porno.
November 12th, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Let’s have Stuart Townsend’s Dorian Gray character and Peta Wilson’s Mina Murray-Harker from the movie “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen”…
Re webnyc’s comment #6 above, I think it was Catherine Deneuve in The Hunger with Bowie, not Sarandon…
November 17th, 2008 at 8:07 pm
Here are a few suggestions:
1. Vampire Children. There is nothing creepier than young innocent-looking children running around in a nursery room…filled with gore and the corpses of the parents/babysitters.
2. Beastly-looking Vampire Creatures (similar to those in the movie I Am Legend). They are in chains and cages while acting all savage and wild…and suddenly one or two of them break loose and “attack.”
3. Vampire Hookers. Sexy, sultry woman seducing men (and women maybe) on a street corner…than they rip their throats out
4. Vampire Nurses and Doctors. The setting is a hospital in which patients are laying in beds and gurneys…while being drained and dismembered with the nurses and doctors chewing on their flesh and drinking the blood.
5. Vampire Ravers. (Similar to Blade) A bunch of young trendy (and creepy) guys and girls dancing at a rave full of glow sticks and strobes lights…while blood and gore (water in reality) is sprayed at the patrons. There could be hung bodies dripping with “blood” in the way of the patrons.
6. Vampire Aliens. A spacecraft has landed and the aliens are abducting people…to feast on their organs and blood.
7. Vampire Stalkers. Menacing shadowy figures roam in a dimly lit room. Some are real and some are moving manniquins…the real ones lunge and “attack” the patrons. They look all sickly and diseased.
November 17th, 2008 at 8:16 pm
I just thought of another idea…it is a bit on the religious side, but I don’t think you’d mind:
8. Vampire Demons- A scene set in Hell with vampire-like demons torturing and abusing people…by carving symbols into their bodies, tearing their chests opens, slowly but painfully pulling out their intestines, hanging them by hooks, breaking their bones, and of course drinking the blood in the process. This would have a lot of sound and special effects, including fire effects.
November 18th, 2008 at 6:46 pm
Of Course I love Lestat from Anne Rice’s books
So have him, but also have lots of blood dripping.

Is there away to drop blood behind glass
and get that drip drop sound
that freaks me out, the site of it
and the sound
November 18th, 2008 at 6:49 pm
Bill from True Blood
November 18th, 2008 at 6:52 pm
As far as scary goes - Nosferatu and the vamps from 30 Days of Night - totally creepy!! There should also be “good guys” - DEFINITELY Bill from True Blood and maybe Louie from Interview with a Vampire.
November 18th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Lestat! Hands down! Lestat!
November 18th, 2008 at 7:20 pm
My Top 5, with a few unusual vampires who would make great additions to next year’s Nightmare:
5. Kiefer Sutherland’s vampire gang member in the movie “The Lost Boys” - spikey platinum hair, motorcycle jacket, and a mean streak.
4. The female stripper vampires in the movie “From Dusk Til Dawn”.
3. The fast-moving, virus-infected vampires in the movie “I Am Legend”.
2. The small-town Texas sheriff vampire in The X-Files episode “Bad Blood”, played by Luke Wilson: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9drs_xHbLB4&feature=related. (This would be a great comedic addition to the house, similar to the war veteran who “urinated” on the crowd this year.)
1. The vampires of the “Blade” movies, specifically the head vampire and the “reapers” in “Blade 2 — accompanied by strobe lights and “Blood Rave” techno, of course.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:41 pm
In taking on the idea that vampires are born of the underworld and evil, The Lord of Darkness from the movie Legend has always been a favorite of mine. He is in essence not a vampire but in my opinion can be tied in with them.
November 18th, 2008 at 7:51 pm
The Lost Boys - all were scary
Fright Night - all were scary.
Dusk Till Dawn - all of them were scary
True Blood (HBO) - The blad guy with the tattoos on his head, the bartendar, the old perv.
Kid vampires - kids are always scary.
November 18th, 2008 at 8:13 pm
Original Count Dracula (Bela Lugosi) CLASSIC Charming Transylvannian vampire with the haunting accent. Vlad Tepes was the original living “vampire” however. Rasputin was the Russian version vampire. Nosferatu was always quite creepy but an awesome vampire. The vampires from Underworld movies are hott! Of course the newest and more modern vampires from the Twilight series as well as from Bloodlines. Van Helsing incorporates Vampires and Werewolves which I think would be a Great mix for the Nightmare Haunted House! Vampires, Werewolves, Witches, Goblins, Mummies.

I am an avid Vampire fan, and after seeing my email, I can’t wait until 2009!! How will I ever contain myself an entire year to wait for this?? My favorite vamps (which will be more than 5, sorry!) are: Claudia(nothing like a child vamp!), Lestat, Louis, Akasha and Armand from Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles, Bill Compton from True Blood, the classic Dracula, of course, and any of the vamps from Underworld. Keep us updated, this sounds like it will be awesome!! >:o)=
November 19th, 2008 at 2:41 am
I am a fan of the Anne Rice vamps but one of my all time faves is Radu from Subspecies and what’s great is that he is not a good looking vampire so he would be perfect to scare the hell outa some1
November 19th, 2008 at 6:54 am
Lestat
November 19th, 2008 at 8:15 am
I like the idea of seduction turned to terror, so I like Moonlight with Alex O’Laughlin. Lestat (Anne Rice), The Lost Boys, Fright Night with Chris Saradon, True Blood, Underworld, Blacula, and a bunch of others I can’t remember.
November 19th, 2008 at 7:35 pm
Blade // The vampire leader from 30 Days of Night (not famous, but still awesome)
November 20th, 2008 at 1:36 am
You need to have a room dedicated to Buffy the Vampire Slayer!!!
November 20th, 2008 at 1:36 am
Drusilla, Spike and Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer!!!!
November 20th, 2008 at 2:48 am
* Cujo, the St. Bernard would be great. A vampire dog, I think. An animal–or person in an animal suit might work. Then again, I wouldn’t want to be in a hot, furry suit for several hours.
* A room full of bats, or remote controlled, rubber flapping objects.
* Every great vampire has a cadre of gypsies to distract and trick people
Thanks for the most original and entertaining haunted house! It was great fun.
November 20th, 2008 at 3:51 am
First of all, please don’t listen to most of these posts. When you ask people for their FAVORITE vampires, of course they’re going to give you the sexy hero characters and not the things that will actually scare them - and that is the point of a haunted house right? Even characters like Nosferatu, who is at least scary, might be too familiar - although replicating the scene when the shadow of his hand reaches into the woman’s heart could be effective now that i think of it. I do think the idea of doll-like child vampires could be very creepy though, and you should put renier on staff - most of those ideas are brilliant. As for my suggestion - there was a scene in I Am Legend when Will Smith walks into the house where the vampires live - i think looking for his dog - and he sees a group of them standing around in a tight circle with their heads bent, breathing fast and heavy, that i still think about. For one thing, you never find out what they’re doing - but it seemed primal, secret, ritualistic, to me. Some people I’ve spoken to thought they were sleeping but it creeped them out too because its so bizarre. So, bizarre, inexplicable primal and possibly ritualistic behavior in vampires is what I’m getting at.
Also I think a sick twisted person who thinks he/she is a vampire or just chooses to kill people and drink their blood could almost be more disturbing than a traditional vampire because there is no actual difference between us and them. The Vlad the impaler and Elizabeth Bathory suggestions tye into this idea, or for a more modern take there’s the jeffrey dahmer school of psychopathic cannibalism and the fake voodoo practitioners or devil worshippers who have to been known to partake.
I have a non vampire related suggestion as well. If I remember correctly, the first year of nightmare I believe you had a guide taking people through the house and that has definitely been the best year I’ve seen to date. I think that although it might seem scary at first to have to navigate through the dark by yourself, when you actually do it, you spend so much time trying to figure out where to go - and then talking about it with the other people, “pausing” and asking the actors to step out of character and tell you - that it turns out to be a mood buster. You find yourself having to rally your practical side and once that’s done you remember that its all make believe and it’s suddenly not so scary anymore. When you have someone giving you hints of which way to go, you dont have to worry about that, so you can relax into allowing yourself to be scared. And they don’t have to lead through the whole thing, they can go first really quickly and then disappear or stay back and motion for you to go on, just as long as you’re not doing your own navigating. I’ve also seen guides used really effectively - they can be their own character, and having to follow someone you dont trust and are a little afraid of can be a nicely unsettling position to be in. They can also add to each room - giving just enough background to stir the imagination or interacting slightly with the other characters. So

LESTAT FROM INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE
AKASHA-QUEEN OF THE DAMED
BILL COMPTON, ERIC & PAM FROM TRUE BLOOD
NOSFERATU
THE VAMPIRES FROM I AM LEGEND
THE VAMPIRES FROM 30 DAYS OF NIGHT
November 30th, 2008 at 6:24 pm
All vamps are awesome, but in my opinion Nosferatu is my favorite. The 1922 silent film made this vampyre seductively creepy. His presence was felt in the walls he passed by. The part where he is creeping on the side of the bed of his victim & it suggests that he would love to make love to her is by far the best scene in vampyre history. Even the creepiest of all want to be loved.
December 2nd, 2008 at 5:08 am
YOU GOTTA HAVE INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE THING GOING ON…THAT WOULD BE GREAT… THAT IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE VAMPIRE MOVIES
December 11th, 2008 at 12:10 am

My first favorite vampire was Dracula, as played by Bela Lugosi. When I was in junior high, I loved Barnabus Collins on “Dark Shadows”. Then I got a little older and fell in love with le Comte de Saint Germain, a handsome, melancholy heroic vampire created by Chelsea Quinn Yarbro who was based upon an actual historic personage of the same name. The Lost Boys creeped me out, but in a good way. And of course I loved Bill in Charlain Harris’ Southern Vampire series long before it ever became “True Blood” the TV series. But I think I like Eric Northman, his boss, a lot better. He is one bad-ass vampire. But when it comes to Sookie Stackhouse, he’s a pussycat. He hates himself for loving her but he can’t help it.
I also liked Carmilla in “The Vampire Lovers”, which was based upon a short story called “Carmilla” which I found in an anthology of vampire stories. As well as two other fictional vampires; Sonja Blue, who is both a vampire and a vampire hunter, created by the talented Nancy A. Collins, and Jack Fleming, a vampire detective in 1930’s Chicago created by P.N. Elrod.
Those are all my favorite vampires. I hope you give each one a passing mention in next year’s Nightmare. My husband wouldn’t go with me to see it this year because he thought last year’s wasn’t scary enough. He was so blase, he was walking through the haunted house saying “Hello” to all the ghosts while I was cowering behind him, keeping my face hidden in his back! I hope you can make a better impression on him next Halloween.
December 15th, 2008 at 2:47 am
Reggie Nalder’s Barlow
Christopher Lee’s Dracula
Other Vampires from ‘Salem’s Lot
Lestat from IWTV
Radu from Subspecies

This is going to be tougher than you might think. So much of our love of Vampires is not tied into the fear aspect of them but the sex. Now sex and fear is a wonderful mix when done right but its not easy. The times it has been done best I think are in from Dusk till Dawn, Bram Stroker’s Dracula, and the Hunger. But for the pure fear aspect of the Vampire mythos I would lean more towards 30 days of night, John Carpenters Vampires, and the “Vampires’ in I am Legend.
I must admit that I have always liked the Vamps in Bordello of Blood for both the sex and the horror mix. I wish you guys luck with this and I think that the more interaction you can work into it the event the better
